Connect Cursor to Any API

Give Cursor Composer and Chat a verifiable human identity. Cursor fetches 5-minute domain-scoped tokens via Remote MCP to interact with external APIs on your behalf.

Preferred: 1-Shot Setup Prompt

Paste this prompt directly into Cursor. It safely installs the agent skill and wires the Remote MCP endpoint:

I want to install the AgentOnboard skill and MCP server:

1. For skill, run:
npx skills add agentonboard/skills -g -a '*' -s '*' -y

2. For MCP, place the following configuration into your global MCP config file (~/.cursor/mcp.json):
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "agentonboard": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://agentonboard.xyz/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer <key>"
      }
    }
  }
}

3. API key setup:
Ask me for my AgentOnboard API key (starts with aon_live_). If I provide it, replace <key> with my key and write this config. If I prefer not to provide it in chat, show me the exact config and tell me where to save it.

4. Once done, remind me to restart Cursor or reload MCP to load the get_token tool.
Rules: Never commit or echo the full API key into persistent files or chat logs.

Your secret key (aon_live_...) is configured directly on the client transport. It is never stored in Cursor’s persistent conversation history or prompt cache.

Alternative: Manual Setup

If you prefer to configure Cursor by hand without using the automated prompt:

1. Install the agent skill

Installs workflow instructions so Cursor understands auth.md discovery:

npx skills add agentonboard/skills -g -a '*' -s '*' -y

2. Configure ~/.cursor/mcp.json

Add this configuration to ~/.cursor/mcp.json:

~/.cursor/mcp.json

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "agentonboard": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://agentonboard.xyz/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer <YOUR_API_KEY>"
      }
    }
  }
}

3. Reload session

Restart Cursor / reload MCP to initialize the new tools.

Verify connection

In your Cursor chat or terminal, ask:

Run the whoami tool and tell me which AgentOnboard account is connected.

Cursor will call the Remote MCP server and print your verified email:

{
  "email": "user@example.com",
  "key_prefix": "aon_live_abcd"
}

Frequently asked about Cursor

Where does Cursor save MCP server configuration?

Cursor stores global MCP servers in ~/.cursor/mcp.json and workspace-specific servers in .cursor/mcp.json at your repository root. We recommend global setup so your agent identity works across all projects.

Does Cursor support Remote HTTP MCP servers?

Yes. Cursor natively supports Streamable HTTP Remote MCP servers with custom headers. Our endpoint at https://agentonboard.xyz/api/mcp connects directly over HTTPS without local background daemons.

How do I know Cursor loaded the tools?

Open Cursor Settings > MCP. You will see 'agentonboard' listed with a green indicator showing the get_token and whoami tools.
